2 Adapted Books:
Students use picture cues and inferencing skills to select a picture from the picture bank to complete each picture-supported or text-only sentence frame. Repetitive and predictable text patterns quickly give students confidence as they proudly read and complete the sentence frames throughout the book.
Mini-Anchor Charts:
Full page chart showing where each vegetable grows. Includes a picture-only version and one with picture labels. Can be used as reference support or a communication tool.
Picture Vocabulary Cards:
Cards with real photos of all vocabulary that is used throughout all activities within the mini-unit. Vocabulary cards can be used as a support for individual activities or displayed as a word wall. Make a second set of cards and cut the picture from the word for an additional picture-to–word match activity.
Task Cards:
Each task card has a photo of a vegetable and 3 response choices of the way the vegetable grows (up on a plant, down underground, or all-around on a vine). Students can use mini-erasers, paper clips, clothespins, or dry erase markers to select their answers. This activity is an easy and fun way to work on reading comprehension.
Where Does it Grow? Vocabulary Sort
This 3-column sort reinforces the information found throughout the various activities in this resource. Picture vocabulary card sets are included for each category: On a Plant/Up, Underground/Down, and On a Vine/All Around. Students select a vegetable picture card and determine which category the vegetable belongs to. Students can use the adapted book as a reference tool to research the answer if unsure or to provide textual evidence to support their answers.
Response Sticks:
Pictures of how plants grow can be attached to craft sticks and used as response options across activities for students to demonstrate understanding of the text. Pictures can also be put in a sensory bin for students to select and match to vegetables.
