THE GINGERBREAD MAN Adapted Book Companion

A holiday classic! This adapted book companion for The Gingerbread Man story includes everything you need to bring the magic of The Gingerbread Man to your classroom. Students will love the many interactive activities that support the original story of the gingerbread man.

This resource includes:

Three Adapted books: differentiated to meet the needs of diverse learners. Adapted books are a great way to engage emergent readers and provides the scaffolding to support English Language Learners. These interactive books focus on the people and animals the gingerbread man sees after his escape from the oven.

Each page has the same repetitive sentence and sentence frame:

“Run, Run, as fast as you can!”.

“The (person/animal) can not catch the Gingerbread Man ”

Students complete the sentence frame on each page by selecting the matching picture from the picture bank and attaching it to the corresponding page.

Story Retell Poster: a large poster with interactive pictures of the characters and animals in the story. Students attach the pictures to the poster to retell or sequence the story during or after the shared reading.

Word Wall: a set of pictures & word cards with vocabulary from the story. Included is a set of non-identical pictures to add a level of differentiation and engagement.

Picture to Sentence Match: 3 levels of differentiation are included.

Level 1 is a picture-to-phrase match for beginning readers. Each card has the phrase, “the (animal/character)” Students match a non-identical picture to the phrase.

Level 2 includes a picture-to-sentence match with picture-supported text. Students read the sentence and match the picture described in the sentence.

Level 3 includes a picture-to-sentence match with text-only sentences.

Picture Vocabulary Sort: Story related vocabulary pictures are included in three categories- People in the Story, Animals in the Story, and Places in the Story. Students select a vocabulary card and sort it into the correct category. Using the book as a reference tool reinforces looking for text evidence.
