Adapted Book:
Students use picture cues and inferencing skills to select a picture from the picture bank to complete each picture-supported sentence frame. Repetitive and predictable text patterns quickly give students confidence as they proudly read and complete the sentence frames throughout the book.
Sentence Completion Set
Students complete the picture supported sentence frames by attaching the corresponding picture card. This set of sentences reinforces the penguin facts from the adapted book. Use the adapted book as a reference tool to determine the correct answer or to find textual evidence to support an answer.
Picture-to-Sentence Match Task Cards:
Two sets of sentences based on penguin facts from the text are differentiated with a picture-supported and a text-only set. Students read the sentences and match the sentence to the corresponding picture. This activity is an easy and fun way to work on reading comprehension.
True-False Sort
Sentences containing both true and false statements about penguins include two differentiated sets, one with picture-supported sentences and one with text-only sentences. Attach the picture supported version to one side of a sentence strip and the matching text-only version to the opposite side of the sentence strip gives you one set of materials with built-in differentiation. Students read the sentence and determine if it is a true or false statement about penguins and sort it in the correct category.
Example/Non-Example Sort
Penguin vs Not a Penguin students select a picture card and determine if it is a penguin or not a penguin. This activity is for beginning literacy learners therefore the picture set for “not a penguin” contains images of only other animals. Pictures with different levels of visual discrimination (e.g. single image and images with backgrounds) provide differentiation. This is a fun activity to target vocabulary development.
Real/Not Real Sort
This picture sort begins to target the concept of real or fictional and includes headings to support other terms that might be used with students: Not Real, Pretend, and Make-Believe. Students select a picture and determine if it is a “real or not real” penguin and sort it into the correct category. Two sets of fictional penguin pictures are included, one with the same penguin in different clothing or actions for easier discrimination and one set with various fictional penguins.
Penguins Can-Have-Are Sort
This 3-column sort reinforces the penguin facts addressed throughout the various activities in this resource. Picture vocabulary card sets for each category are included for each heading: Penguins can, Penguins have, and Penguins are. Students select a picture card and determine which category the vocabulary card belongs to. Students can use the adapted book as a reference tool to research the answer if unsure or to provide textual evidence to support their answers.
